All the Apollo vehicles have a gasoline engine, automatic transmission, dash (i.e. engine-powered) and roof (i.e. 110 V, 60 Hz) air conditioning, stove burners, microwave oven, sink, refrigerator, freezer, furnace, toilet, shower and 110 V hook-up. All the Apollo vehicles apart from the Cheapa Campa brand have a slide-out, awning, rear-vision camera, LCD TV/DVD player, and generator.

Included in the preparation fee are the first tank of propane, the first supply of toilet chemicals, and the final cleaning of the outside of the vehicle. (All Apollo motorhomes should nevertheless be returned in a reasonable state of cleanliness, completely free of mud, lest the client be charged a cleaning fee. Of course Apollo will deliver the motorhome in a clean condition both the inside and outside.)

The following items are also included by default at no extra charge:

welcome pack for first night: matches, mini shampoo and conditioner, dishwashing liquid, sponge, soap, salt and pepper, coffee, tea and sugar sachets.

kitchen: pots, pans, crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils.

general: dustpan, broom, flashlight, toilet chemicals, first tank of propane, a water hose, sewer hose (and sewer connector), fire extinguisher, toilet paper, toilet chemicals, ice cube tray, coat hangers.

travel wallet: the vehicle operation manual, road maps and campground guides.

unused first aid kit: provided in all vehicles; but if the customer breaks the kit's seal, s/he is charged US$ 50.

All Apollo's USA rentals also include 24/7 nationwide roadside assistance via a toll-free helpline. The IdeaMerge-generated total price also includes the tax and any other fees that might apply (i.e. the vendor's vehicle preparation fee, charges for optional extras, any applicable one-way fee, etc). There is no charge for additional drivers.

Apollo USA rentals include no default miles per day. Rather, miles can be pre-booked in blocks of 500 miles (800 kilometers) costing US$ 171.60 each (including Apollo's 10 percent tax/duty/administration fee) (extras miles being charged upon return at US$ 0.352 per mile, including Apollo's 10 percent tax/duty/administration fee). However, Unlimited miles are available in terms of the inclusive package described below. The included liability (i.e. third party), collision and comprehensive insurance inheres a deductible (a.k.a. excess; applicable no matter who is at fault) of US$ 1000. Clients cannot reduce this deductible; no optional damage waiver (a.k.a. excess reduction or VIP cover) is offered.

Important: In addition to the deductible, Apollo will charge an administration fee of US$ 75 per insurance claim and per speeding ticket, parking fine, traffic ticket, or toll-road fine.

Clients must arrive at the rental depot by their own means, e.g. by taxi. Clients cannot park a car on the rental depot grounds for the duration of their motorhome rental.

Which if any portable GPS navigation option on the open market is best?
See IdeaMerge's analysis of portable GPS navigation solutions.

If you intend to travel to the Burning Man festival with the Apollo rental vehicle (including the Cheapa Campa brand), Apollo will charge you a a special US$ 500 surcharge upon the pick-up occasion. If a client travels to the Burning Man festival with the vehicle and does not advise Apollo/Cheapa Campa of this beforehand, Apollo would consider such travel a breach of their rental agreement and as such the client would be held responsible for any and all loss of or damage to the vehicle from any cause, regardless of fault, and for all related expenses, this is in addition to the US$ 500 Burning Man surcharge.

If you want your Apollo USA motorhome or campervan rental to include any of the following, you should order such items upon placing the reservation. Of course the IdeaMerge online order software will prompt you in these regards. Moreover the IdeaMerge software will calculate whether the better deal for you in these respects is to (a) buy Apollo's inclusive package — which for US$ 75 per day (max US$ 3000) includes all the items below (except the optional GPS device and the possible cost of the first-aid kit and generator use), as well as Apollo's prep fee, unlimited miles, any one-way fee (except with the Cheapa Campa brand vehicles), Apollo's duty/tax/administration fee and any administration fees that might otherwise upon the return occasion apply — or else (b) to pay for said items and fees individually and to pay upon the return occasion for any miles beyond the default included miles noted above. Again, don't worry about this decision, for the IdeaMerge software will figure it out for you based on the information you enter.

Note: in the followng a slash "/" indicates a change in price/policy at the March/April 2010 threshold. The term "na" indicates that the item is not available before (or else after) said threshold. Our online reservation software takes account of all this.

  • mileage package: The IdeaMerge online reservation software will determine and suggest to you the optimal mileage/km solution for the number of miles/kms you plan to drive. Miles can be pre-booked in blocks of 500 miles (800 kilometers) costing US$ 171.60 each (including Apollo's 10 percent tax/duty/administration fee). Unlimited miles are available as part of the inclusive package described above. You cannot purchase these options upon the pick-up occasion. Upon the return occasion miles beyond any pre-booked number are charged at US$ 0.352/0.385 per mile (including Apollo's 10 percent tax/duty/administration fee).
  • Apollo's TomTom GPS navigation device: US$ 80/90 per rental (portable unit, fixes to windshield via suction cup mount)
  • damage waiver (alias liability reduction option, LRO): US$ na/15 per day (maximum US$ na/375); reduces deductible/excess from US$ 1000 all the way to zero. Note, this option is not available if the rental pick-up date is prior to April 2010.
  • convenience kit: US$ 50 per person (including children); consists of sleeping bag, pillow and pillow case, bath towel, wash towel.
  • camping table: US$ 20 per rental
  • chairs: US$ 10 each, per rental
  • child seat* (not baby capsule): US$ 40 per rental. See Apollo Child Restraint Policy and/or Apollo Cheapa Campa Child Restraint Policy.
  • booster seat* (not baby capsule): US$ 40 per rental
  • unused first aid kit: standard in all vehicles; but if the customer breaks the kit's seal, s/he is charged US$ 50.
  • generator: US$ 3 per hour used (payable upon return, plus tax)
  • Sorry but Apollo USA does not offer bicycles for hire, nor do they offer bicycle racks for hire. Bicycles can be transported in the motorhome, but the motorhomes less than 22 feet long are not very suitable in this respect.

    * Child safety and booster seats:

Apollo does not allow baby capsules, i.e. rear-facing infant seats, to be fitted in any of its vehicles. Various country, state, provincial and territory laws designate the required use of such seats. (See below.) Therefore Apollo applies a general rule in this respect: Apollo regards such seats necessary for infants weighing up to 9 kg (about 20 lbs) or under 1 year old or under 70 cm tall, thus prohibiting the transport of such infants in an Apollo vehicle (including Apollo's Cheapa Campa brand vehicles). See Apollo Child Restraint Policy and/or Apollo Cheapa Campa Child Restraint Policy.

Generally speaking we can address child safety seats in terms of law or, more wisely, in terms of one or another more general and more conservative (i.e. child-conserving) consensus about child safety. Nevertheless please note that IdeaMerge is neither obligated nor qualified to present to clients nor to the general public the full set of relative laws nor the letter of those individual laws; the comments below, whether about law or consensus are merely intended to indicate the nature of the general issue of child motor vehicle safety and are subject to change without the knowledge of IdeaMerge. In many cases (such as Canada and the United States) the law applies based on the state, province or territory in which the vehicle is registered or in which a particular rental commences. In Canada such law is most strict in Quebec and in Ontario. This is to say, these are the only provincial units in Canada that require booster seats. The North American consensus considers booster seats necessary for children weighing 18–36 kg (aboiut 40–80 lbs), forward-facing safety seats necessary for children weighing 9–18 kg (about 20–40 lbs), and rear-facing infant seats necessary for children weighing up to 9 kg (about 20 lbs). Age-wise these ranges typically correspond to 4.5 years through 7 years, 1 year up to 4.5 years, and 0 years up to 1 year. In Germany, however, the high-end figure is more conservative, in the sense noted above. German law puts this figure at up to 12 years or up to 1.5 m tall; French law puts it at up to 10 years. In Ontario a child need not use a safety seat if (a) his/her weight is over 36 kg (40 lbs) or (b) his/her age is over 8 years (i.e. he/she has turned 8 years old) or (c) his/her height is over 1.45 m (4 ft. 9 in.).… Generally a rear-facing safety seat should not be used in a seat equipped with a functional frontal airbag. Also generally speaking, children under 12 years old should sit in a rear seat.… In the context of the whole IdeaMerge Website it is useful to address a few more specific cases. The state of Washington in the USA is relatively strict: children up to 1 year old or less than 20 lbs must be seated in a rear-facing infant seat; children from 1 year old through 3 years old or 20–40 lbs must be seated in a forward-facing child seat; and children from 4 years old through 5 years old or 40–60 lbs must be seated in a booster seat (in the rear if the front passenger seat is equipped with an airbag). In the state of Oregon children from 0 through 3 years old or less than 40 lbs must be seated in a child seat, and children 4 years old through 5 years old or 40–60 lbs must be seated in a booster seat. In the state of California, children from 0 through 5 years old or less than 60 lbs must be seated in an appropriate child seat, perhaps a booster seat. In the state of Nevada children from 0 through 3 years old or weighing less than 40 lbs must be seated in a child seat. In the state of Colorado, children from 0 up to 1 year old or weighing less than 20 lbs must be seated in a rear-facing child seat; children from 1 year through 3 years old or 20–40 lbs must be seated in a front-facing child seat; and children from 4 through 5 years or less than 55 inches tall must be seated in a booster seat. In the state of New Jersey, a child 0 through 17 months old must be seated in a child seat; a child 18 months through 4 years old must be seated in a child seat if riding in front; and a child less than 8 years old or less than 80 lbs should sit in the rear, if rear seating is available.… In Australia a child from 0 up to 1 year old must be seated in a child seat, and this seat must be fitted with a top tether that is in turn attached to a suitable mounting point on the vehicle; other constraints apply per territory. Altogether it is virtually fair to say that child seats not manufactured for the Australia market will not conform to Australian law, and therefore clients from abroad should not plan to bring a child seat to Australia but should instead rent such from the vendor. In New Zealand a child from 0 through 4 years old must be seated in an appropriate safety seat; a child from 5 through 7 years old must if seated in front be seated in a booster seat or, we are told, secured with an adult safety belt (although this latter option seems too lax). Our vendors tell us it is fair to say that child seats not manufactured for the New Zealand market will not conform to New Zealand law, and therefore clients from abroad should not plan to bring a child seat to New Zealand but should instead rent such from the vendor.
